Twenty-seven year old Rachel Gregory is in the
fight for her life. Diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
(PSC) a few years ago, she is currently undergoing evaluation for a
liver transplant. PSC is a rare, incurable disease that is thought
to be autoimmune in nature. It causes the bile ducts both inside
and outside the liver to become scarred, narrowed and eventually
blocked. As more and more ducts are blocked, bile becomes trapped
and damages the liver, causing cell death and cirrhosis.
Going from full-time employment to disability in a matter of weeks,
having to take countless medications on a daily basis, dealing with the
fatigue and hopelessness; it can get quite depressing. But she has
found a silver lining and is using this time to help raise awareness
about the reality of liver health, organ failure and the overwhelming
need for organ donors.
Through the long list of complications, constant pain, staggering
medical bills and fear of what the future holds, Rachel always has a
smile on her face.
